Down 5 — NS +500

It's rare to see a hand where nobody does anything completely unreasonable and declarer goes down 5 in a contract undoubled. Here, declarer opens a pushy but not ridiculous 2H opening in first seat all red, and is forced to suffer through declaring this contract as a punishment. Presumably, south will lead from the JT9 of diamonds. North wins the bare ace and probably plays the S KA, followed by a third spade. Now declarer has a choice of what to do here, but we'll say he reasonably ruffs low. Now South overruffs low, gives North a diamond ruff, wins the CA and then gives him another diamond ruff. North now leads his last spade. Now declarer must pitch his last diamond to get out for down 4. (Yippee) South has to ruff low, and now he can't make two more trump tricks, and he can't get North in for a promotion, and North can't quite uppercut enough with another diamond. If declarer ruffs at all, South will simply give North a third diamond ruff. If East does anything else, the defense will get +500.
