various divisions for which people in our department might be eligible. These

AGU Awards
- William Bowie Medal. annaul. Acknowledges an individual
for outstanding contributions to fundamental geophysics and
for unselfish cooperation in research. Herb Friedman, Hannes Alfven,
Gene Parker, Don Andersen, Irwin Shapiro, Gene Shoemaker,
Richard Goody, and John Simpson (and also UM's own Helmut
Landsbergh)
- James B. Macelwane Medal. annual. Age <36. This medal recognizes
significant contributions to the geophysical sciences. John Lewis,
Ron Prinn, Lawrence Grossman, Dave Sibeck, Steve Fuselier, Jonathan Lunine.
- John Adam Fleming Medal. annual. This medal recognizes original
research and technical leadership in geomagnetism, atmospheric
electricity, aeronomy, and related sciences. Gene Parker, Tom Donahue,
Alex Dessler, Alex Dalgarno, Don Hunten
- Harry H. Hess Medal. annual. Honors outstanding achievements in
research of the constitution and evolution of Earth and sister planets.

- Charles A. Whitten Medal. biennial. Recognizes outstanding
achievement in research on the form and dynamics of the Earth and
planets. Bill Kaula, Irwin Shapiro, and Gordon Pettengill.
Planetary Sciences Section
- Whipple Award. Presented to an individual who makes an
outstanding contribution to the field of planetary science.
