The badminton 2008 Spring Schedule is from Feb 4 till May 13, excluding Spring Break (Mar 15-23); we play Mondays 7-9:45pm, Wednesdays 7-9.45pm, and Fridays 6:30-9:45pm. As always: you have to be a UMD member and you need to pre-register.

University of Maryland Badminton Club

Badminton at the University of Maryland is a student operated and student funded sports club. Membership is open to all UMCP faculty, staff, students and alumni (this does not include spouses by CRS rules) with dues of $5/semester ($10 for alumni). There are quite a few local badminton clubs if you don't belong to the UMD. The club only plays when classes are in session (fall, spring and summer, with typically a few weeks break inbetween) and we play in the North Gym, where we have 10 hardwood floor courts. The university has no fellowships in badminton. Recently (well, spring 1998) CRS opened a brand-new gym complex, now dubbed ERC, which will also have a new 8-court badminton gym. Open-rec badminton can normally be played on Saturdays 7-10pm and sunday 10am-2pm on 2 courts (yes, we know, there are 8 courts in this gym, 4 of them brilliantly obstructed by heavy basketball contraptions, and usually 2 courts can be used for badminton, and 2 for another sport).

During spring and fall sememster we normally play:

mondays, 6.45pm - 9.45pm
wednesdays, 6.45pm - 9.45pm
fridays, 6.00pm - 9.00pm

During the summer semester (both summer session I and II, with no break inbetween) we cannot play during the weekend, and we normally play:

mondays, 5pm - 7.45pm
wednesdays, 5pm - 7.45pm
fridays, 5pm - 8.75pm

You can also play badminton during the open hours in the CRC (now ERC) building ("East Gym"), but this is not Badminton Club associated. You might find some of us playing during these hours though. CRS is also organizing intramurals, in which badminton used to be played. Finally, the University also offers a credited class in badminton ( KNES 202).

The Badminton Club also has a USAB club membership, which entitles our members to participate in USAB sanctioned tournaments In addition, there is the Northeast Badminton Association, of which we are a member.

Other related sports?
- speedminton, with stiff heavy rackets and a shuttle half the size of a badminton shuttle. No nets.
- footbag a.k.a. Hacky Sack. They (can) use the badminton court, being 20x44' (in doubles, badminton singles uses 17x44'), use volleybal rules. They play with a small bean bag that they can only touch with their feet.
- Pickleball: a game played with a wiffle ball and a paddle within a badminton court. The net is at 34" though (unlike badminton, which is 60/61"). See http://www.usapa.org and http://www.pickleballstuff.com.
