DEEP IMPACT

On July 4th 2005, the Deep Impact spacecraft will encounter Comet Tempel 1. A projectile will be released and will slam into the comet at a speed of 10 km/sec (23,000 mph). The resulting impact will form a crater and a cloud of material will be ejected from the comet. For the first time, astronomers will be able to study matter from the interior of a comet -- substances not altered in the passage of the comet around the sun, material which retains information about the period in which the sun and planets formed.

Join the Department of Astronomy and the
University of Maryland in watching this
historic event

  • Large screen viewing of images from the spacecraft
  • Exclusive images before public release
  • Live discussion with local astronomers and those involved in ground-based observations at the time of impact
  • Connection to the control center at JPL to hear from the Principal Investigator -- Mike A'Hearn

This program will be held on the University of Maryland campus in the Physics Lecture Hall. Impact is currently targeted at 1:52 AM (+/- 3 minutes) July 4th.   Doors will open at 11:30 PM July 3 .

While the event will be free, tickets will be required.
