15th Annual October Astrophysics Conference in Maryland

New Windows on Star Formation
in the Cosmos

 October 11 - 13, 2004
College Park, Maryland

I.   Place and Date

The Conference will be held at the Inn and Conference Center at the University of Maryland, College Park, MD. It will run for two and one-half days (and evenings), Monday morning through Wednesday afternoon, October 11-13, 2004.

II.   Purpose of the Conference

This will be the fifteenth in a series of topical conferences that are arranged each autumn by scientists at the Goddard Space Flight Center and the University of Maryland. Each of the conferences is devoted to a single topic in astrophysics research, and is organized to elicit the free discussion of ideas.

III.   Scientific Organization

The conference will be devoted to the discussion of new ideas and data associated with star formation, with particular emphasis on the emerging results from Spitzer, Galex and new ground-based surveys.  It will be organized into non-paralleled sessions that are each about 2-½ hours in duration.  A typical session will include three formal invited talks (each about 30-minutes) and a few contributed talks selected from abstracts submitted with pre-registration.  Even if not selected to make a formal oral contribution, every poster author in each session will have the opportunity to orally present one viewgraph (in one minute) to advertise his/her poster.

In order to be given consideration as a potential oral
contribution, your abstract must be received with a
completed registration form which includes the
registration fee by
August 15, 2004.

Selections of short oral contributions will be made by
the session chairs in early September. You will be
contacted via e-mail by September 15, 2004 if you have
been selected (you will not be contacted if you are not
selected to make an oral contribution).

IV.    Posters

Registrants are encouraged to utilize posters to introduce their ideas for discussion with other conference participants.  There will be ample room for poster display in the informal area where coffee and tea are served each day during 30-minute breaks between sessions, and light refreshments will be provided for extended poster perusal on Monday evening until 9:30 pm.

POSTER SPACE IS NOT GUARANTEED UNLESS THE ABSTRACT
IS RECEIVED
 WITH A COMPLETED REGISTRATION FORM,
WHICH

INCLUDES THE REGISTRATION FEE, BY SEPTEMBER 15, 2004.

V.    Proceedings

We have formally published the Proceedings of the previous meetings in this series, but our advisory committee has suggested that this year we should, instead, provide the opportunity for all participants to simply post their contributions at the conference website.  More details will be provided at a later date.

VI.    Transportation

College Park is close to the city of Washington, D.C., but the Baltimore-Washington International Airport is closer than either National or Dulles Airports (although transportation can be arranged from any of the three).  Click here for other local information.

Since public transportation to the university is not convenient, shuttle buses will be operated between the College Park Holiday Inn and Quality Inn and the site of the conference, the Inn and Conference  Center on the campus of the University of Maryland.  Shuttle schedules will be available at all three locations.  Lunches will be provided at the conference, so that private cars will not be necessary for full-time conference participants.  Parking will be available for those who prefer to use private cars.

VII.    Accommodations

The local organizing committee has arranged for blocks of rooms to be available for conference participants at the Inn and Conference Center (a full-service hotel), the Holiday Inn and the Quality Inn.  Following are phone numbers and daily rates (which we believe, but cannot guarantee, to be current) for singles and doubles at these hotels.  Please contact the hotels DIRECTLY for reservations, and indicate that you are an attendee of the  Astrophysics Conference at the Inn and Conference Center.

Since our costs depend on room bookings at the Conference site (Inn and Conference Center), we encourage you to consider booking rooms at that location.

VIII.    Registration

The Registration Fee for pre-registered (prior to September 15, 2004) attendees will be $275.  The fee for late registrants will be $325.  The registration fee includes lunches and light refreshments served throughout the conference (including an informal reception on the evening of Monday, October 11), a banquet on Tuesday evening, October 12, a souvenir T-shirt, and a book bag filled with program materials.

This year we should have sufficient resources to allow registration waivers for a limited number of students and post-docs who have no individual or institutional support. The criteria utilized to select registration waivers will be a combination of need and the quality of the submitted abstract.  Any individual seeking a registration waiver must submit the registration form with an abstract by July 15, 2004.  Decisions regarding registration waiver will be transmitted to those who have applied for it by August 15, 2004.

The registration form below will be used for planning purposes. Please include an ABSTRACT for any formal contribution that you would like to make to the conference. All such contributions should be assumed to be posters unless the organizing committee requests an oral presentation.
