Infrared Background Light from First Stars

17th Annual October Astrophysics Conference in Maryland

Radiation Backgrounds from the First Stars,
Galaxies and Black Holes

October 9-11, 2006
College Park, Maryland

I.  Place and Date

The Conference will be held at the Inn and Conference Center at the University of Maryland, College Park, MD. It will run for two and one-half days (and evenings), Monday morning through Wednesday afternoon, October 9-11, 2006.

II.  Purpose of the Conference

This will be the seventeenth in a series of topical conferences that are arranged each autumn by scientists at the Goddard Space Flight Center and the University of Maryland. Each of the conferences is devoted to a single topic in astrophysics research, and is organized to elicit the free discussion of ideas.

III.  Scientific Organization

The conference will be devoted to the discussion of  new ideas and data associated with the study of radiation backgrounds, especially as they refer to the formation and evolution of stars, galaxies and black holes.  It will be organized into non-paralleled sessions that are each about 2-½ hours in duration.  A typical session may include three formal invited talks (each about 30-minutes) and three or four contributed talks selected from abstracts submitted with pre-registration.

In order to be given consideration as a potential oral contribution, your abstract must be received
with a completed registration form which includes the registration fee by
August 15, 2006.

Selections of short oral contributions will be made by the session chairs in early September.
You will be contacted via e-mail by September 15, 2006, if you have been selected.
(You will not be contacted if you are not selected to make an oral contribution).

IV.  Posters

Registrants are encouraged to utilize posters to introduce their ideas for discussion with other conference participants. There will be ample room for poster display in the informal area where coffee and tea are served each day during 30-minute breaks between sessions, and light refreshments will be provided for extended poster perusal on Monday evening until 9:30 pm.

Poster space is not guaranteed unless the abstract is received with a completed
registration form, which includes the registration fee, by SEPTEMBER 15, 2006.

V.  Proceedings

We have formally published the Proceedings of the previous meetings in this series, but our advisory committee has suggested that this year we should, instead, provide the opportunity for all participants to simply post their contributions at the conference website. More details will be provided at a later date.

VI.  Transportation

College Park is close to the city of Washington, D.C., but the Baltimore-Washington International Airport is closer than either National or Dulles Airports (although transportation can be arranged from any of the three).  Click here for other local information. Lunches will be provided at the conference, so that private cars will not be necessary for full-time conference participants who lodge at the Inn and Conference Center. Public transportation to the university is not convenient so parking will be available for those who lodge elsewhere.

VII.  Accommodations

The local organizing committee has arranged for blocks of rooms to be available for conference participants at the Inn and Conference Center (a full-service hotel), the Holiday Inn and the Quality Inn. Following are phone numbers and daily rates (which we believe, but cannot guarantee, to be current) for singles and doubles at these hotels. Please contact the hotels DIRECTLY for reservations, and indicate that you are an attendee of the Astrophysics Conference at the Inn and Conference Center.

Since our costs depend on room bookings at the Conference site (Inn and Conference Center), we encourage you to consider booking rooms at that location.

The registration fee includes lunches and light refreshments served throughout the conference (including an informal reception on the evening of Monday, October 9th), a banquet on Tuesday evening, October 10th, a souvenir T-shirt, and a book bag filled with program materials.

The registration form below will be used for planning purposes. Please include an ABSTRACT for any formal contribution that you would like to make to the conference. All such contributions should be assumed to be posters unless the organizing committee requests an oral presentation.
