Title/Name Description
A Brief History of Time This program is the software version of Stephen Hawking's book of the same name. The topics covered on the CD-ROM include a biography of the author, explantions of his theories on black holes and the beginning and end of the universe, and kistories of past scientists in the field of astronomy. Can be run without installation or sound card, but much of the information is auditory.
CCD Atlas of Deep Sky Objects Collection of images of Deep Sky Objects
Voyage to the Stars Collection of pictures taken by Voyager, the HST and other telescopes. Inclues graphics software which allows you to save and manipulate the images. The software contains various palettes and filters and saves in both .gif nad .arn formats.
Voyage to the Planets Collection of images of the planets
Pathfinder and the Best of Mars Collection of images from the Pathfinder mission. Also includes pictures from Viking and video clips.
Real Sky - The Palomar Sky Survey The entire Palormar survey on 9 CDs
Earth Observatorium Images of the earth from space
Redshift Multimedia survey of observational astronomy: generates horizontal or equatorial views of the sky from any time or place in the Solar system, including the planets and their moons, star fields, constellations, deep sky objects and others. Contains many features to track and view planets and other objects. CD required to run program, but can be run without installation. Recommended installation require 1.7 megabytes.
Redshift 2 Multimedia survey of observational astronomy: generates horizontal or equatorial views of the sky from any time or place in the Solar system, including the planets and their moons, star fields, constellations, deep sky objects and others. Contains many features to track and view planets and other objects. CD required to run program, but can be run without installation. Recommended installation require 1.7 megabytes.
Redshift Voyages
Distant Suns Very similar to Redshift, this program contains night sky views of stars, planets, and galaxies. Easier to track movements of planets and Sun. Run from CD, optional installation requires eight megabytes.
Cosmos:Voyage through the Universe Planetarium software that includes information on the constellations, a planetarium portion, a laboratory protion that uses multimedium to provide information about well known stars. Also includes legends and mythologies about the constellations.
The Universe Beyond More graphics-oriented, this program contains mostly information on observational astronomy and historically important scientists of astronomy. Also, it has an interesting section devoted to ancient history of astronomy and astrology as revealed in the legends of ancient cultures. A sound card is required, and five megabytes of memory for installation.
Exploring Our Solar System This is an introduction to the Solar System, with tours of the planets, asteroids, and comets. Interesting emphasis on planetary geological processes, including volcanism, tectonics, wind, and others. This program does not work correctly without installing, which requires eight megabytes for complete installation or four megabytes for necessary files to be installed. QuickTime movie viewer (contained on the CD) must be installed to use some features.
Orbits
Visions of Mars A CD-ROM was recently sent to the planet Mars carrying detailed information about present-day Earth and technology. Intended for future colonists of Mars to view and read, the contents of the CD were duplicated into this computer software. Can be run from CD without installing.
The History of the Universe Interactive CDRom that provides information about various topics in astronomy such as cosmology and stellar formation. Includes quizzes for different levels of users.
Powers of Ten This is a "spin off" of the Powers of Ten video. It includes the oringal movie and other ways to depict distances and scales such as time and patterns.
Impact: Ground Zero This CD contains several quick time video interviews with the scientists involved with the KT impact theory and current asteroid detection efforts. There are also some images of terrestrial impact craters.
Deep Space This CD-Rom features images from the HST. The images include pitures of galaxies, nebulae, star clusters, and the planets.
Mars: Past, Present, Future This CD-Rom comes with companion videos exploring the different stages of Matian exploration. The CD explores the historyof human interest in Mars. Various Martion missions are featured, including Mariner, Viking, Pathfinder and Global Surveyor. There is information about the planet's geology and future plans for Mars Exploration.
The Ultimate Einstein This is a study of the physics and relativity work done by Albert Einstein. It also contains a biography and description of his theories as they apply to space and time travel, as well as small "experiments" and demonstrations of travel near the speed of light. A sound card is required, as well as two megabytes for minimum installation
Dance of the Planets
Galaxy Guide This program emphasizes the sky's constellations, with information on the individual stars, galaxies, nebulae, etc. found in each. The format is divided into each season of the year and sky, with information on each constellation under those categories. No installation necessary, but optional full installation requires nine megabytes
Explore the Planets This is an introduction to Solar System, with tours of the planets, asteroids, and comets. Interesting emphasis on planetary geological processes, including volcanism, tectonics, wind, and others. This program does not work correctly without installing, which requires either 8 mb for full installation or 4mb for partial. Quick Time movie viewer must be installed for some features to work.
Stars & Stories This is an integrated curriculum unit set up for middle school aged students on trigonometry, distances, constellations, and myths. It is painfully low level for use with college students, however there are excellent graphics on parallax and cepheid variables that could be used in lectures if you turned down the sound and covered it with your own information. Can be installed through a more limited process if intending to run from CD.
Star Probe This CD allows you to "send a probe" to 8 different Northern and Southern Hemisphere stars. The spectrum for each star is provided along with reference spectra that can be used by the students to determine the composition of the star. While this is not an intensive lab activity, it is a good demonstration and the selection of stars from evolutionary stages helps make some useful demonstrations about composition of a star and its age. The CD also contains a function that allows you to watch the life cycle of different mass stars step by step from formation to final stage. This does not need the CD to run and can simply be copied on to multiple machines. There is no real installation procedure beyond copying the files.
Nine Worlds Interactive program concentrating on the nine planets of the Solar System, including the Moon and Sun. Detailed information and graphics of each planet, with orbits, moons, and composition explained. This program has links to many Internet sites and is recommended to be used with an Internet connection. Must be installed.
Glorious Eclipses
Virtual Physics:Escape from Brain Death Computer adventure game including physics puzzles on such topics as waves, optics, light, and electricity
Virtual Physics:The Eggs of Time Physics adventure game that includes puzzles to solve on such topics as Motion, Forces, Newton's Laws, Machines, and Thermodynamics
