Dr Tyler's research has primarily involved the theoretical study of the fluid dynamics and electrodynamics of oceans on Earth and other planetary bodies. This can be thought of as the study of the flow of fluid (often water) and electric charge and the interaction of these two flows. Recent applications have included the calculation of ocean tides on moons in the outer solar system (as well as the association of the tidal flow with significant heat generation), and the development of methods for using spacecraft magnetometers to remotely infer ocean flow.
