Rob Swaters studies the structure and kinematics of galaxies, and the properties of dark matter in galaxies. He is particularly interested in dwarf and low surface brightness galaxies, because these systems appear to be dominated by dark matter. He also works on spiral galaxies, studying the masses of their disks and their dark halos. His other interests include the vertical structure of neutral hydrogen in disk galaxies and polar ring galaxies.

Rob Swaters is also involved in the development of a data reduction pipeline for the Kitt Peak MOSAIC and NEWFIRM instruments.

Rob Swaters received his PhD in Astronomy from the University of Groningen, the Netherlands in 1999. He was Carnegie Fellow at the Department of Terrestrial Magnetism and Davis Fellow at Johns Hopkins University before joining the University of Maryland in 2004.
