MD Driving License and Registration

One of the joys of moving to a new state is dealing with the DMV. You always have to wait in line, but if you go prepared and go on the least busy days (they tell you which ones), the experience doesn't have to be unpleasant.

For information go to this website: http://mva.state.md.us

Remember to register your car in the first 30 days of residency so that you avoid paying an exorbitant fee: 5tax otherwise is $100.

In order to register your car, you will need it to pass a 75 point, one time inspection (about $40-$50 at approved auto shops). You will also need to pass an emissions test once every two years (about $10).

Since you are going to be a student here, it is possible to get away with not registering if you can work some deal where you get somebody in another state (e.g., your parents) to claim that your ``permanent address'' is in that state.

If you don't have a car, you don't need a MD driver's license, although occasionally it helps to have an in-state photo ID. (The University's ID typically won't cut it.
