Getting around DC
There
are alot of great things to do in the District, and there is no better
way to get to them than on the awesome subway ("Metro") system! Its
safe, clean and efficient. The Metro can take you almost anywhere in
DC (and its a pretty small place anyway). Maps are free and available
at all stations as well as being posted in the trains and on the web
(http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/local/longterm/metro/front.htm).
The minimum fare from College Park is $1.10 and the maximum is over
$3. Fares are higher during rush hours. If you are going to take the
Metro three or more times in a day then its more economical to buy a
$5 day pass. Commuter passes are also available. Despite the high
crime rates in the District, the Metro is perfectly safe. It is
extremely rare to have a crime committed in the subway stations or
trains. You really need not worry about going on the subway by
yourself at 12:00 am, although you do need to worry about taking the
subway much later than that - the last train leaves most stations
between 11:40 pm and 12:00 am.
Parking at the College Park Metro
on the east side is cheap; its only dollar if you leave between 3 and
10 pm on weekdays. At other times and on weekends and holidays,
parking is free! On the campus side of the Metro, however, there are
only parking meters which run till 10pm.
