Getting around the area
The easiest way to get around in Maryland is by car. Although traffic can
be bad during rush hour, students can generally avoid those times. There
are usually alternate routes (off the main roads) that don't get congested.
Many department members prefer to bike to work. This is a nice alternative
to driving if you live close to the University. Helmets are a must; there
are few biking lanes along major roads and lots of traffic that probably
won't be looking out for you. There is also the university shuttle system
which is free and runs to several places, such as New Carrolton, Silver
Spring, Greenbelt, and Adelphi between 7 am and 11 pm. The Metro Bus system
complements the subway system nicely. You can go lots of places, and it's
generally cheap ($1.10). However, buses can be quite infrequent (especially
as you go farther from the University).
The best way to get around DC is definitely by Metro. It's clean, safe,
efficient and covers the DC area nicely.
