Finding a Bank
There are several banks in the neighborhood, and it's a good idea to shop
around before deciding which one to open an account with. Perhaps the one
most commonly used is SECU (State Employees Credit Union) which offers
(essentially) free banking. As with any credit union, the number of automated
teller machines (ATMs) is small, but there are at least two of them on
campus. The branch office is located just north of Greenbelt Road on the
east side of Route 1. Both checking and savings accounts are free, although
you do have to deposit 10 dollars into a savings account to become a part
of the credit union (or, as they call it, ``buy a share'' into the credit
union).
Other popular local banks are NationsBank, Crestar Bank, First National
Bank of Maryland, and Chevy Chase Bank (which has a branch office right
inside the Student Union). All have ATMs on or around campus, and many
offer nice promos at the beginning of the school year to get students to
open accounts with them.
