Gull,Audouins01.jpg
Audouin's Gull. Bussaglia beach, Corsica, 2/4/07. We were amazed to find this life bird standing on its own, with no other birds around (apart from some distant cormorants/shags). My field guide describes this species as "one of the world's rarest gulls" but also says there has been a "significant increase in [the Western] Mediterranean in recent years." The key fieldmarks, easily seen by this obliging gull (it stayed for at least 10 minutes), include the dark legs and bill (to distinguish it from Yellow-legged Gull, the only other large gull expected), dark eye, and pale back.
