R   Please read O&C Ch. 2 (review), Ch. 9, and Ch. 10 sections 1 and 2.

 

P  Is the spectrum actually sensitive to the luminosity (radiative output) of the star?  If not, what is the physical effect behind luminosity classes?  How much does that effect vary among stars?

E  (Exercise)   Stop in at your friendly astronomy library and familiarize yourself (at least 20 minutes) with Astrophysical Quantities, either in its recent 4^th edition (called “Allen’s Astrophysical Quantities,” ed. Cox) or in an older edition by C. W. Allen.  I’ve never been in an astronomy library that didn’t have at least one copy on reserve. 

In particular, check out the section in the front with constants and units and the sections on the Sun and Normal Stars.  If one of the problems calls for data you can’t find readily in O&C or on the web, turn to AQ!
