Grok Hill 1977-1998

Too many people in the last two decades have been involved in the building and re-building and improvement of this little cabin in the woods to give credit to all. But Pete Miller, shown in the picture, lived there longer than anyone (3 years, 12 seasons). The "atrium" shown behind him, was rebuilt by his brother Mike and his helper Adam and the so-called "owner" Ed Schmahl in October, 1997.

The Schmahl family finally made use of the new atrium in December. The only member of the family to use it that night was Ed, being the only one with a super-warm sleeping bag. The reason the atrium was cold that night was not because of poor construction, but an insidious porcupine that chewed a hole in the side wall. You can't see the hole in the second picture (zoomed and enhanced) because it's behind Pete's left leg! The hole is now--belatedly-- patched and the atrium is now warm as toast--well, maybe cool toast. With all the patching and caulking, it may be too warm in the summer, and we'll have to figure out how to open one of those cockeyed side windows.
