ASTR120 HOMEWORK # 4 - Due October 1

1) Do #3 in the Thought Question section in Chapter 6.

2) Thought question: Would there be eclipses of the Sun if the Moon's orbit were inclined at 30 degrees rather than 5 degrees.

3) Do #13 in the Problems section in Chapter 6.

4) What is the length of the sidereal day for a person living on the Moon? What is the time difference between the solar day and the sidereal day on the Moon? Give numbers for the length of the day and the time difference in units of Earth-hours or Earth-days. Hint: Go back to the definitions of sidereal and solar day, draw a cartoon of the Earth-Moon-Sun system and think about how things would look to you if you were on the Moon.

5) Calculate the angular size of the Sun when the Earth is at apgee and perigee, Assuming that the Moon's orbit is circular, calculate the angular size of the Moon. Use these angular sizes to explain whether the Moon can always block-out the Sun completely during an eclipse. Hint: The various sizes that you need and the eccentricity of the Earth's orbit can be found in the Appendices in the back of the book.
