My Meaning of Life

If you hadn’t noticed, I’m not a religious person.  At best, I would be described as agnostic.  But, I do recognize that we are here, and therefore the universe came from somewhere.  It exists, and there seems to really be no obvious reason why.  In this case, there is no scientific evidence (and never will be) to support any particular theory over another, since we’re discussing things that are before the big bang.  So, we might as well all go about believing whatever we want to believe.

Maybe it’s because I’ve spent far too much of my life playing games like Civilization, but it would make me happy to know that we as a species are being scored, and compared with other species on other planets somewhere else in the universe (or even in another universe for all I care).  We gain points for how long we survive, our accomplishments along the way (both scientific and cultural), and how we handle the problems thrown at us.  Things like finishing the human genome project or uniting the theories of GR and quantum mechanics, would get us big bonuses as well as accomplishments like attaining a certain standard of life for everyone on Earth.  We would lose points (or gain fewer points at least) for bad things like high % of poverty, # of people killed in wars, # of people enslaved, illiteracy, etc.  Our score keeps accumulating as long as our species remains alive, and at the end we get a total, and a prize based on where we finished.  I think we could totally outexist all those other species.  Yes, I realize that outexist isn’t really a word.  But it should be
