****Notes on ViewsBHs still images **** www.astro.umd.edu/~rauch/ViewsBHs/ Kevin P. Rauch, JHU & UMD rauch@astro.umd.edu This directory contains selected still frames from the "Views of Black Holes" MPEG movie (located in the video directory), computed at higher resolutions to show increased detail; for a general overview of the images, see the video README file. The hidef and vga directories contain the same images, only at different resolutions: 1536x1024 for hidef, 600x400 for vga. Images are available in both JPEG (.jpg) and PNG (.png) formats. The nogr directories contain versions of the images (where provided) showing what the view would look like ignoring general relativistic effects---no gravitational redshifts or light bending, etc. The book directory contains book quality (~4000x3000) JPEGs of the images. These images may be freely redistributed and used, for non-profit purposes, subject to proper acknowledgement of the author. Image descriptions ------------------ distort: From episode 2, a view of the Doppler shifts and optical distortions produced by a near-maximally rotating (a=0.998) Kerr black hole. lensed: A view of the symmetric multiple images produced near the disk plane by a Schwarzschild (non-rotating) black hole; from episode 3 (r=6.00). rings: A close-up of a frame from episode 1 (a=0.25), showing the multiple ring images of the face-on disk. subrings: An extreme blow-up of a small portion of `rings', showing detail in the ring images. Three lensed rings are visible. spiralFW: The confoundingly distorted disk image seen by the corotating observer near the end of episode 6 (a=0.998, r=1.24), in which several highly distorted images of the disk are visible. The view window is centered on the true position of the black hole. spiralBK: Identical to spiralFW except that the image is now centered on the observer's back view (looking out towards infinity).
