Regarding the point system used at the National Championships conducted 2/18/96: The system that was used encourages large numbers to participate, which in the USA is a good thing. Out of the 14 schools which sent representatives, 5 schools had only one or two people. I would not consider one or two to be a true team. There are plenty of tournaments where only individual championships are determined, and these people would have many opportunities for individual accomplishments. One could establish a separate "efficiency award" given in addition to the national championship. This could be based on average points per player, but I would still require the divisor to be a minimum of two or three. One could also have 3 team championships: men, women, and overall. Many people would go home happy. The one exception might be more applicable to the midwest or west, where Universities are more distant from each other. In this case, the home team might have a significant advantage in terms of numbers. They could limit their team to 6 or 8 members, and have two or three teams entered. For example, a Swarthmore "A", and Swarthmore "B". I would like to see a similar point system developed for an ABCD drop flight tournament, with points awarded in all 4 classes.
