the 2009 National Capital ("DC") Open

at the University of Maryland

The DC Open is an annual USAB sanctioned badminton tournament in the D.C. area
Has $4000 in prize money, and is thus a National Ranking Tournament again
Tentative schedule and list of players
Is hosted by the University of Maryland Badminton Club , and the Badminton Club of D.C.
Will be played January 9-11, 2009 in the North Gym (HHP, building #225, now renamed the SPH building) at the University of Maryland campus in College Park, MD.
Maps and directions: (please note the implications of the Saturday noon Basketball game on campus)

- Navigating on the College Park campus, especially writting for the 2009 DC Open Saturday parking issue.
- Directions to HHP/SPH, as given by the Kinesiology Dept (the main inhabitants of this building). Their page describes how to get to the front of the building, i.e. Valley Drive. We however recommend parking in the new parking garage off MD-193 eastbound as per previous directions.
- A campus map. The gym is in west top part of the Health and Human Performances (HHP #255) building, the Arena Parking Garage (TTG #403) is where you want to park, and is accross a small bridge and path to the north (sort of to the right on this bizarre map) of the gym. Best is to enter the garage going east on University Blvd (MD-193).
- Here's the older direct google maps link to the gym.
There is a UM basketball game Saturday at 12pm, this will complicate those trying to get into campus after 9am and before 12pm. So please, arrive early to prevent parking frustration. Parking in the usual garage is not free. Use the Campus Drive entrance from Rt. 193 and free parking is in Lot 1, right by the Clarice Smith Center.

4. Telephone: Peter still has one of those old fashioned things in his office. Try 301-405-1540 (it has voice mail as well). but I'm known to be away from my desk a lot. Also note there is a $5 penalty for this!
Note the deadline has a very strict Friday, January 1, 2010. If by that date your check has not arrived, a $5 penalty automatically applies unless you have made prior arrangements. Also note that entries may be limited if they fill up before that date (typically 32 or 16 per event, depending on the event)
Campus activities, in case you get bored in the gym.
As usual, expect Ronney's services along the sidelines.
Our conference hotel is the Clarion Inn, with a special discount rate, $70/night with group number 15030 (check). Call 1-800-442-1644 or 301-474-2800. Hotel has complimentary breakfast and internet, and also provides shuttle service to the gym on campus, although there is actually a walking path accross the little stream towards campus. See our annotated map.

- The campus information system has some details on how to get to us, in particular how to get here by train, plane, or automobile, and on local lodging . The Office of International Programs on campus has good web pages on for example where to stay and where to eat.
- The UM Shuttle service runs a frequent shuttle service between the College Park Metro station and the Student Union, a mere 5 minute cross-campus walk (north) to the gym. This shuttle service is open to the general public.
