# ASTR 100 (Veilleux) HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS

## Homework #2 (20 Points) Due Wednesday Sep. 20

Start this homework by reading the "How to Study With This Book" and "Astronomy on the Internet" sections of the Preface. Then finish reading the Introduction and the first several sections of Chapter 1. Be sure to try the "Test Yourself" Questions at the end of each chapter (answers are on page 541) - this is a great way to see if you are absorbing the material. It is also an excellent way to practice for the exams, which will include multiple choice questions similar to these ones. I recommend doing this throughout the semester for each of the chapters that we cover.

Now you should be easily able to work the following questions and problems. Always put your name and section number at the top of your homework!

 Chapter Questions for Review Thought Questions Problems Introduction (Page 13) 9 - 1, 2, 7 Chapter 1 (Page 52) 8, 12 4 1, 4 Essay 1 (Page 66) 1 - -

Extra Credit (2 Points): Go to the class web page and explore the link Computer Programs located just below "Material to Help You Out". Use the "Astronomical Distances" program to help check your answer for P7 from the Introduction. How fast can you make the spaceship travel? How quickly can you get to the nearest star?

Run the "Scientific Notation" program until you are sure that you can do this type of problem in your sleep (or on a midterm!). What happens when you get a problem right? Do the same for the "Working with Equations" program. If you have trouble doing either of these problems, be sure to talk to your TA about it. These are the ONLY type of math problems that I will ask you to do on a test.
