PROBLEM SET # 1

This problem set is intended to introduce you to some of the research tools currently available on the Web.

Problem 1.

Access NASA's Extragalactic Database (NED) and answer the following questions:

(a)
Print out the spectral energy distribution [i.e. log f$_\nu$ (in Jansky) as a function of log $\nu$] with error bars for Arp 220 and 3C 273. Notice the differences!

(b)
Print out a high-resolution VLA image of Arp 220 that shows the well-known double nucleus.

(c)
List a 1994 reference describing the study of a superbubble in the nucleus of NGC 3079.

(d)
Print out a finding chart of NGC 1068 showing the position of this object relative to the positions of some of the brighter SAO stars. Explain the orientation and scale of the image.

(e)
NGC 1097 is one of Halton Arp's favorite object for a possible (but very questionable!) QSO-galaxy connection. List the names of all QSO's within 15 arcminutes of NGC 1097.

(f)
According to NED, how many articles in the Annual Reviews of Astronomy and Astrophysics have been published on extragalactic astronomy since 1977? Explain how you came to your answer.

Problem 2.

Access the Digital Sky Survey at the Space Telescope Science Institute and print out a digital image of NGC 3079. Explain the orientation and scale of your image. Also point out the names and positions of any other galaxies that appear on this image.

Problem 3.

Use the LANL astro-ph archive on the Web to answer the following questions:

(a)
What is the latest paper to be published in the Astrophysical Journal relating to the Hubble constant?

(b)
Print out Figure 1 of the latest paper on which my name appears as a first author

Problem 4.

Use the Astronomical Data System (ADS) Abstract Service on the Web to answer the following questions:

(a)
Print out the *french* version of the abstract from a 1999 paper by Sandage and collaborators on the Cepheid Period-Luminosity relation.

(b)
In the early 1990s, George Jacoby wrote a comprehensive review of the methods for measuring extragalactic distances. Give the reference and mention the number of times this paper has been quoted in the scientific literature.
