Title: "Solar Flare X-Ray Spectra in the 21st Century"
High-energy X-rays from solar flares were merely a curiosity when they were discovered with a Geiger counter on a balloon flight sixty years ago. They are now the primary diagnostic for accelerated electrons and the hottest plasma produced in flares. I will describe how the analysis of flare X-ray spectra evolved from power-law fits to spectra that extend over many orders of magnitude in flux to deducing physical properties of accelerated electrons and their environment. These spectra are now a critical component for obtaining an understanding of both particle acceleration and the evolution of flares. I will conclude with a discussion of the importance and future of combined imaging spectroscopy in X-rays and the EUV.
