Finally a full view of le Palais des Papes. Various popes took residence here during the 14th century when the political situation forced them out of Rome. At one point, when the Italians wanted the pope back, two popes were elected, one in France (at Avignon), the other in Italy (in the Vatican). This was the so-called Great Schism of the Catholic church that was finally repaired in 1417 when both popes were replaced by a mutually agreed-upon third. Very complicated... |
