Galactic Millisecond Pulsars

Have you ever asked (or been asked) questions such as:

  • How many millisecond pulsars are currently known in the disk of the Milky Way?
  • What is the largest dispersion measure currently known for a millisecond pulsar?
  • Has anyone already found this great looking millisecond pulsar candidate?
  • How many isolated millisecond pulsars are currently known?
If so, then you've reached the right page!

In 2012, spurred on by a flurry of millisecond pulsar discoveries that were floating around the internet but had not yet been published, Dr. Duncan Lorimer (West Virginia University) put together a simple plain-text file listing all the published and unpublished millisecond pulsars not associated with a globular cluster. I took over maintenance of the list in 2019.

As of , there are

552 MSPs in THIS LIST

For the purposes of this listing, a millisecond pulsar is defined as having a spin period less than 30 ms. Of course, other definitions exist and you can prune the list as you see fit.

Hopefully this compilation is useful. Please acknowledge the URL in any papers that make use of it. In order to keep this list as up-to-date as possible, I strongly encourage all observers to send additions, updates, or corrections using this Google form.

David Smith has contributed this Python script to convert the text file into FITS format.
