Phone Conference Summary August 3, 1998 ========================================== Attending: Scott, Shepherd, Sutton, Wright, Scoville, Mundy Comments on the A-array and Wildcard memos were solicited. Ed said everything looked ok. Mel stressed two points: (1) he preferred a star-array over a T or Y because the star gave better coverage for short time intervals. He viewed the star as an acceptable compromise from a circle or curved triangle, but we should not go further toward a T or Y. AND (2) we should specify an S-array (very short baseline array) from the start. Nick was ok with the wildcard approach; he had no specific comments on the A-array. Steve reported that the botanists were ready to go; the archaeologist was almost in place. The botanical study must start soon to study the plant-life before everything dies. Steve reported that the Forest Service meeting is currently scheduled for August 26. We need to have a complete outline of our plan for that meeting. Steve want to prepare overlays of the pad locations. We need to have the pad locations set by Aug 12. Steve outlined some of the differences between the nominal pad locations as outline in the memo, and the measured pad locations which include topographic considerations. Steve and Mark produced a nice summary of their measurements and their considerations concerning alternative pad locations; that summary is now on the Configuration Webpage in the 16-Element Star Configuration section. Modeling with the measured pad locations provided by Steve and Mark has not proceeded as quickly as desired. Debra has done a comparison of the nominal B-array versus the measured B-array. Steve pointed out that the northernmost outrigger station in the current plan will requiring the cutting of a number of trees. He suggested that we look into an A-array configuration with a shorter north arm, and longer arms along the roads to the southeast and southwest. This option was discussed; it should be possible; Debra and Lee will do some modeling. Lee requested that Steve and Mark measure the location of one of their visual markers (a tree or post) relative to the center of the array and that they measure a location near the end of the south-west road. Steve answered Mel's questions regarding elevation limits due to local topology -- it isn't a big issue except possibly for the newly proposed stations to the southeast and southwest. There was a short discussion about antenna assemble on the site -- it is possible that both the 6-m and 10-m antennas will be partially reassembled at the site -- requiring a crane. This needs more thought for the EIS statement. Action Items: ============= 1. Lee and Debra model the measured pad locations for the C and A arrays. 2. Debra and Lee look into a new A-array configuration with a north arm that stops at the rise on the north end of the flats and has more extended southern arms along existing roads. 3. Steve and Mark provide measured positions for one or two of their visual markers to fix their coordinate system onto existing topo and aerial maps. Also scouting and measurements of potential pad locations along the southwest and southeast roads. These measurements can be done when convenient. 4. Lee and Debra look into a very short baseline array, S-array. This is lower priority than the first two modeling efforts as we are planning to include the wildcard area in the EIS. NEXT MEETING: August 12 at 11 am PDT.
