Phone Conference Summary August 12, 1998 ========================================== Attending: Scott, Hodges, Sutton, Wright, Mundy (Shepherd -- late due to my error) Modeling of the B-array using the measured pads was done by Shepherd and Mundy. The conclusion was that the new position for SW6 was ok. The sidelobes are a little higher for declination -5 than for the requested position but not enough to justify repositioning SW6. The B-array is the the only one that uses SW6. The other star pads were close enough to the requested positions that changes are minor. Mundy will produce final beams and coverages when all of the pad locations are finalized. The various alternatives for A-array configurations were discussed. We defined: Option 0 = Array from section 1 of memo of August 1998. It includes the N9 pad. Option 1 = option 1 from section 2 of memo of August 1998. It has the same resolution as option 0 but drops N9 and adds stations to the south. Option 2 = option 2 from section 2 of memo of August 1998. It drops N9. It has lower resolution than options 0 or 1 and has lower sidelobes for source declination of -5 degrees. It should be the least expensive option due to shorter baselines and less stations off the main star. Steve discussed the possibility that the access road could take a northern route passing by N9 -- which would cancel out the originally perceived negative environmental and cost impacts of N9. It was generally agreed that more resolution was better, although Ed expressed some preference for the lower sidelobes of option 1. We officially rank options 0 and 1 as preferred and agreed that the final choice could be influenced by the route chosen for the access road. Mark Hodges talked about the work that he has done looking at the horizon elevation limits. A few of the outrigger stations have potential problems (ERS3, SW9, and perhaps ERN3) but all are likely solved by moving the pad locations by 15-30 meters in the appropriate directions. Ideally we would like to be able to observed down to 15 degrees elevation in all directions, and down to 10 degrees toward the southeast, south, and southwest (ie to observe the galactic center and other southern sources). Steve reported that the biology survey is proceeding; the field work should be done next week. The report is due October 1. The archaeology survey is not started; they are still negotiating on the proposed work. The S-array has not yet been defined but it is not forgotten. Action Items: ============= 1. Steve and Mark will measure locations for the new pads proposed in A-array options 1 and 2. They will measure the horizons for all the outrigger pads and move pads to try to comply with the target horizon limits listed above. They will also measure the road so it can be accurately put into our maps. 2. Lee will produce ps files of pad locations for overlays for the Forest Service meeting. 3. Short spacing array still needs to be designed. Next Meeting: Some time in September.
