Phone Conference Summary July 13, 1998 =========================================== Attending: Scott, Shepherd, Mundy (Mark Hodges sitting-in) There was a very short discussion of the A-array and Wildcard memos. Since Mel, Ed, and Nick were not present, we will seek their feedback next time. In response to Mel's email questions, Steve said that only one of the remote pads is visible from Highway 395 and they propose to move that one so that is is not visible. Steve and Mark will measure the z-height of the proposed pads; Lee will see about including that in the modeling (Debra said that her programs did not allow for z). Steve reported on the progress of the site survey. They have done a first pass marking the pads at the end of the star and all remote pads except for the two to the north. Their measurements involve an iterative procedure since the realtime readout must be corrected after-the-fact to yield absolute positions. They plan to have a second iteration and perhaps a third. The hope is to complete the measurements by the end of this week (July 17), or first of next week. Steve said that there were some difficulties fitting the star in with the detailed geography (trees, hills, etc). They may need to shorten certain arms by 50 meters or bend the ends of the arms a little. Steve and Mark will chose alternative positions where necessary; Lee and Debra will evaluate the alternative pad positions and select the best options. The possibility of a more compact array than the D-array was discussed. Leo requested that we look into the details of such a configuration and it was generally agreed that we will. Debra suggested that we call it the S-array, rather than the E-array, so that it wouldn't be confused with an Equatorial array -- thus was born the Short-spacing array, S-array. The details of roads and the movement of antennas need to be considered at some level in the S-array. Lee will have a first look at possible configurations and pass along suggested configurations to Debra. We all thought that we would try to keep the Wildcard proposal in the plan even if the S-array is explicitly included in the EIS. If the S-array is spelled-out, the proposed number of wildcard pads can be reduced -- perhaps to 3 to 5. Steve agreed that the exact pad locations for the S-array are NOT on the critical path for on-going site work since they will be contained within the proposed Wildcard area. Action Items: ============= 1. Steve and Mark complete the site survey and produce a list of pad locations, and alternative locations as necessary. Target date for list of pad locations: July 17 to 20. 2. Lee and Debra will evaluate the measured pad locations and suggest the best configuration. Target date for completion: July 27. 3. Lee and Debra will make a cut at the S-array. They will produce a memo in time for the August 3 call. !! Next Proposed time: August 3, 11 PST !! ==========================================
