Astronomy pictures
When I taught introductory astronomy, I combed the web and found
a number of images on public sites that seemed interesting or
educational for one reason or another. This directory, and its
subdirectories, contain many of those images. As these are not
my own creations, these are intended only for free public use.
The categories of images are:
- Compact objects
Neutron stars and black holes.
- Cosmology
CMB, gravitational lensing, Olber's paradox, etc.
- Earth
Plate tectonics, maps, lava flows.
- Galaxies
Images of our galaxy and others. Some clusters.
- History
Photos of historical astronomers and instruments.
- Instruments
Telescopes, balloons, rockets, satellites.
- Nebulae
Molecular clouds, reflection nebulae, supernova remnants, etc.
- Physics
Mostly EM spectra.
- Solar system
Planets, satellites, comets, asteroids, planetary formation.
- Spectra
Actual spectra and schematic figures.
- Stars
Stars and star formation.
- Sun
Ol' Sol, in various guises plus explanatory figures.
Most of the image titles in the directories are self-explanatory.
Clicking on a thumbnail or title brings up the full image.
