By way of background, I double-majored in mathematics and chemistry at Pfeiffer University in North Carolina and earned my Ph.D. in physical chemistry from the University of Tennessee. I taught chemistry, astrobiology, and introductory astronomy courses at Eckerd College (Florida) for thirty years. For about twenty-five of those years I also collaborated with scientists in the Astrochemistry Branch of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center on research into solar system and interstellar chemistry. At present I am privileged to work with the Goddard Center for Astrobiology. Finally, I have been an amateur astronomer for about fifty years, so that one of my favorite teaching activities is participation in courses like this one.
