Hi! I'm Sara Frederick, an astronomy graduate student
at the University of Maryland.

I study active galaxies in the time domain
with a wide-field optical survey
and multiwavelength follow-up.

I identify systematically and in real time "changing looks" occurring in galaxies that should not be variable but suddenly activate in the optical, displaying emergent broad spectral features and blue continuua. To do this, I take advantage of the high cadence and large field of view of the Zwicky Transient Facility, a predecessor to the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope coming online in 2020.

I have experience with physics and astronomy outreach for all ages. I am currently the senior graduate student advisor of the Astronomy Gentleladies' Network (AGN), a mentoring program connecting graduate and undergraduate women in Physics and Astronomy at the University of Maryland as part of the Equity Constellation chapter of the Access Network.
