2002 U.S. SENIOR

NATIONAL BADMINTON CHAMPIONSHIPS

MARCH 21-24, 2002

and the Badminton Club at the University of Maryland

VENUE

McDonough Gymnasium at Georgetown University, Washington, D.C. The facility features 10 wood floor courts and a very high ceiling. Many tourist attractions in the heart of Washington are nearby, the Georgetown shopping district and Washington Harbour are within walking distance. There is a good transport system that makes moving around Washington D.C. and the surrounding suburbs easy. See the website for more local tourist information.

EVENTS

MS, WS, MD, WD, and XD in all age groups 35+ to 80+. Format will be open, with consolations for first round losers. Matches will be best of 3 games to 15 points. A 5 minute rest is permitted after each game of a match. Where there are insufficient entries, age groups may be combined, or played in a round-robin format. Participants may play in a maximum of four events, if at least one is mixed. A fifth event may be added at the discretion of the tournament committee.

ELIGIBILITY

All participants must be US citizens (or have been a resident for 1 year), USAB members, and meet the age requirements on the opening day of the championships, March 21, 2002.

Thursday, March 21 3.00-7.00 pm registration at the gym
4.00-7.00 pm Play begins for 50+ and older events
7.00-8.30 pm Wine and Cheese Reception (hosted by Washington DC 2012)
Friday, March 22 8.30 am registration continues at the gym
9.00 am All events start play
Saturday, March 23 9.00 am All events continue play
7.30 pm Dinner and dance (casual)
Sunday, March 24 9.00 am FINALS (play concludes by 5.00 pm, please plan your flights accordingly)

TRANSPORTATION

Please also complete the section on the entry form below for transportation. There are three airports in the DC Area: Reagan National Airport, Dulles (both in Virginia) and BWI (in Maryland). The closest and most convenient is National Airport, but Dulles and BWI are more likely to have direct flights from the west coast. Attendees are responsible for their own transportation from the airport (shuttle busses are generally your best option).

SHUTTLES

USAB-approved shuttles will be used for the 2002 U.S. Senior National Championships.

ENTRY FEES AND DEADLINES

Entry form must be received by Sunday, February 24, 2002, preferably through the electronic version from our website. An additional $10 fee will be charged for telephone (301-405-1540) entries. If you register electronically, you can also pay via paypal account name: teuben@wam.umd.edu.

LODGING

The official hotel is the Key Bridge Marriott (1401 Lee Highway, Arlington, VA 22209). The rates are \$109, single or double, w/o continental breakfast; $114 single with breakfast; $119 double with breakfast. Reservations for the Event must be made by individual attendees directly with Marriott by calling 800-228-9290 or 703-524-6400 on or before March 6, 2002, accompanied by a first night room deposit, or guaranteed with a major credit card. You must mention USA Badminton to get this group rate.

DIRECTIONS

From the hotel, take the Key Bridge into Washington. At the end of the bridge make a left at the light onto M Street. Go through one stoplight as M Street changes to Canal road. (You will pass an EXXON gas station on the right.) After you pass the gas station, make the first right about 1/4 mile from the station. Georgetown's campus sits off to the right on top of the hill. McDonough Arena will be directly in front of you as you enter Parking Lot 3 (approximately a 15 minute walk). More detailed directions and maps also on our website.
