2004 - Deep Impact Spacecraft

2004 - Deep Impact Spacecraft

I am currently working on the Deep Impact project that is sending a
spacecraft to comet Tempel 1. The mission is designed to drop an 800-lb
impactor onto the comet to produce a crater and reveal the more pristine
ices below the surface. The flyby spacecraft will study the crater
formation and the material that is revealed in the impact.

DI launched on January 12, 2005, and my Mom and Dad got to go to Florida
with me to view it firsthand. The encounter with comet Tempel 1 is on
July 4, 2005. To commemorate this project, I made a model of the
spacecraft, with the the impactor able to separate from the flyby.

It is made primarily of toothpicks.
