Multimessenger Astronomy at the Highest Energies
Speaker: Angelina Sherman, UW-Madison
Abstract: Ultrahigh energy cosmic rays are the highest energy particles ever observed, yet their sources remain unknown. Observational evidence indicates that these accelerators must have a redshift evolution that is not too strong, are able to accelerate heavy nuclei, and share a universally similar injection spectrum. In this talk, I demonstrate one more surprising piece of evidence about ultrahigh energy cosmic ray sources: that they must be dim in gamma-rays. I then discuss how upcoming observations of neutrinos above an EeV can be used to constrain the nature of ultrahigh energy cosmic rays sources.
