About

Welcome to the Department of Astronomy at the University of Maryland! We are committed to excellence in research, education, and outreach. Our internationally recognized research program addresses fundamental questions on all scales, from the intricacies of planetary systems to the mysteries of distant galaxies. Our observations span the electromagnetic spectrum, from radio waves to gamma rays, using humanity's most advanced telescopes around the world as well as in space. We collaborate closely with NASA Goddard and other research centers, allowing our department to be a leader in developing new space missions. Our theoretical research groups use state-of-the-art computational resources to model astrophysical phenomena such as black holes, dark matter halos, and the structure of the universe as a whole. Naturally, we offer a rich curriculum of classes that range from introductory astronomy for non-majors to highly specialized graduate seminars. Whether in education or research, we strive to create a culture of mutual respect and collaboration between students, teachers, and faculty, because inquiry always works best in community. Embracing the full spectrum of perspectives our scholars bring allows us to see the universe with fresh eyes. Join us on our journey to unravel the secrets of the cosmos!
