Computation and Simulation
As computing technology rapidly advances, researchers continually develop software and algorithms to keep pace and maximally utilize the astounding resources. How can simulations be scaled to the exascale era, where software will run on millions of CPU cores in parallel? How can we use graphics processing units (GPUs) efficiently? How can open-source software improve the reproducibility and robustness of scientific results? And how can artificial intelligence advance the development of code and the efficiency of research?
UMD astronomers develop and deploy a wide range of computational software to push these frontiers, from particle-in-cell codes to ray-tracing algorithms to magnetohydrodynamic solvers. They also use computationally intensive statistical tools to analyze observational data. As a result, the astronomy department is among the heaviest users of UMD’s Zaratan high-performance computing cluster. Department members additionally prioritize the development and maintenance of a number of open-source projects.
