After beginning his career as a computational fluid dynamicist and also working on computational modelling of microstructural fracture of metallic polycrystals John joined the Infrared Processing and Analysis Center at Caltech where he primarily focused on asteroid detection algorithms for use in large surveys like NEOWISE, LSST, and NEOSurveyor. After over a decade focused on those topics John came to UMD to join the Small Bodies Node (SBN) engineering team where he leads SBN cybersecurity efforts as well as working on various other engineering tasks as needed.
