Joyful Mentorship: Improving Relationship Practices and Outcomes for Mentors and Mentees
Speaker: Dr. Kimberley Griffin, UMD
Abstract: Mentorship is often celebrated as the heart of graduate education, an academic accelerator, and professionally rewarding. But without intentional cultivation and practice, these relationships often fall short of our expectations. One thing that is often missed in our efforts to improve academic mentorship is consideration of whether and how it is connected to joy and wellbeing. While we may not often think of our academic work and training in these terms, they can often improve the quality and outcomes of our experiences in higher education. This talk will present theory and research that can help guide our practice as we strive to form strong mentoring relationships that intentionally promote intellectual growth and academic success alongside joy and wellbeing.
Host: Prof. Chris Reynolds
