Exoplanet System Age as a New Dimension of Giant Planet Formation, Structure, and Evolution

Abstract: The origin and unusually large radii of hot Jupiters are some of the oldest problems in exoplanet astrophysics. While previous studies have used observed system properties to address these problems, I will show how exoplanet system ages can be used to approach them from a novel direction. I'll first discuss my time resolution of the formation and subsequent evolution of hot Jupiter systems on secular timescales from more Solar system-like configurations, as well as implications for future study of giant exoplanet systems across a wide range of orbital separations. I'll then discuss my work investigating the anomalous heating histories of inflated hot Jupiters, highlighting how precise space-based observations will help further constrain their evolution. If time allows, I'll also briefly discuss some very recent results investigating the atmospheres of two ultra-hot Jupiters with JWST.
