Michael Terrance Thorpe

Assistant Research Scientist

845 661 6397
mtthorpe@umd.edu University Of Maryland College Park

Dr. Thorpe's research centers on exploring the geochemical and mineralogical transformations of sediments and sedimentary rocks system wide (i.e., from source to sink) in mafic terrains, both on Earth and other planetary surfaces. His work has the overarching themes of unraveling sedimentary processes, reconstructing ancient environments and paleoclimates, understanding the geological carbon cycle, planetary exploration, and preparing for Mars Sample Return. He combines field work from exciting places around the globe, planetary mission work, detailed laboratory analysis, and a passion for mentoring the next generation of scientists.
