Department Facilities

The astronomy department has access to a variety of facilities to enhance research and education:

  • Discovery Channel Telescope - The University of Maryland is a full partner in the Discovery Channel Telescope (DCT), which is operated by Lowell Observatory. With a 4.3-meter mirror, DCT is the fifth largest telescope in the continental US and one of the most technologically advanced. First light took place in July 2012 and science operation began in 2013.
  • University of Maryland Observatory - Located on the northwest side of campus, the observatory includes a 20" and a 14" telescope as well as a number of smaller scopes. It is used frequently for classes, open houses, and other events.
  • Uco Van Wijk Memorial Library - Our department library contains 4000+ books and many more journal volumes. This page includes links for book searching and the UM Library System.
